Decentralized Operations: What They Are, and What Franchising Teaches Us About Making Them Work


 

Franchising is the clearest real-world example of decentralized operations I know, because the split between what stays centralized and what gets pushed to the local level isn’t accidental — it’s the entire structure of the business relationship. The franchisor owns and protects the brand. The franchisee owns and runs the local business. Everything about how the model functions flows from that division.

The question isn’t whether to centralize or decentralize. It’s how much control to cede for the sake of local responsiveness, and how much to retain for the sake of brand integrity.
